During the American Association of Nursing Anesthetists (AANA) Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress in Chicago, Illinois, held on August 9-13, 2019, Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing nurse anesthesia students showcased their leadership and knowledge in the nurse anesthesia field. Martha Sabino, (pictured on the left) Goldfarb nurse anesthesia student, was selected to give an oral presentation on “Stroke Volume Variation in Liver Resection: A Replacement for Central Venous Pressure” during the conference. Martha did a wonderful job presenting her topic to a packed crowd during the meeting.
Emily Imhoff, Goldfarb nurse anesthesia student (pictured on the right, between with Bernadette Henrichs, PhD, CRNA, CCRN, Goldfarb’s director of certified registered nurse anesthetist program, left, and Brian Torres, DNP, CRNA, Goldfarb’s assistant director of certified registered nurse anesthesia program, right) applied to the Education Committee and gave a presentation on her goals she wished to accomplish if she were elected to the Committee as a student member. Unfortunately, she was not elected. With thirteen students applying for the position, the competition was higher this year than it ever had been in the past. Congratulations to Emily for applying as the process was a great educational experience.
Another Goldfarb nurse anesthesia student took the stage to participate in the 2019 AANA Anesthesia College Bowl. Sarah Galvin (in the below picture, third from the right) served as a team member to represent Goldfarb for the annual College Bowl. Six teams of students played against each other, answering questions about anesthesia. The two top teams then competed against each other, and Sarah’s team won. The winning student team then faced off against a team of six CRNAs (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists) to determine the College Bowl winner. Ultimately, the student team won. Congratulations to Sarah and her team members!
Dr. Henrichs reflects on her student’s hard with great admiration and says, “Our students represented Goldfarb in so many ways at our national meeting! They work so hard in the classroom, in the simulation lab and in the clinical area and this is demonstrated through their leadership activities. They truly are the nurse leaders of our future, and we are very proud of each of them.”
