Goldfarb's new online program is flexible for working nursing students and is designed to prepare graduates for a health care leadership role. Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing is now offering a new Master of Science in Nursing degree with curriculum focusing on the health care system and managing the health of groups of people. Developed for BSN-prepared registered nurses, the program is open to full- and part-time students, and all required classes are online to provide flexibility for those who are working and busy with other commitments.

This new program is replacing Goldfarb’s former leadership concentration which focused on the management of the health care system exclusively. In this new concentration, students will continue to learn about the health care system along with managing the health of groups of people.

“The field of population health is becoming more of a focus in health care, so we’ve redesigned the curriculum to create a more enriched program that encompasses population health,” said Deborah Birk, PhD, RN, MHA, NEA-BC, director of the Health Systems and Population Health Leadership concentration at Goldfarb. “Our curriculum will give students the tools to improve health outcomes of a population, as well as learning to lead within a health system, resulting in a more enhanced masters education in leadership.”

The concentration includes courses, seminars and practicum experiences that incorporate knowledge about population health, the economy of health care, organizational theory, human resources, technology and innovation applications, as well as skills in collaboration, management and leadership in the context of their impact on health care delivery. The leadership-focused clinical experience can be based in the St. Louis area or in an approved hospital or clinic.

“Graduates of our program will have the education to build strong teams, lead departments and develop and implement clinical programs that improve the health system, whether inside or outside a hospital setting,” said Birk.
