Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing has received a 2018 Nursing Education Incentive Program (NEIP) grant from the Missouri State Board of Nursing and the Missouri Department of Higher Education. Goldfarb will use the $150,000 grant to purchase technology designed to augment nursing instruction.
Goldfarb nurse researchers plan to study the new technology to see if it has measurable effects on student outcomes such as increasing licensure exam scores.
“As the education of nurses is ever changing, along with the landscape of health care, we look to provide our nursing students with the best education possible. Seeking out innovative ways to educate and prepare nurses is a top priority,” says Sandra Burke, PhD, RN, FAAN, Goldfarb academic chair for the upper division programs, professor and director of West Campus Site.
Burke and Holly Diesel, PhD, RN, are co-principal investigators on the grant with consultation from Gretchen Drinkard, PhD, RN, and Jean Davis, PhD, RN, FAAN. Burke and Diesel will work with nursing students and faculty to investigate if the educational product purchased with the grant money benefits students’ nursing confidence and competence, leading to measurable outcomes, such as increasing National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX) scores.
“We will systematically analyze the product to determine if it improves student outcomes,” says Burke.
The 20-month study, beginning fall of 2018, will follow Bachelor of Science in Nursing students in Goldfarb’s upper division program at the Duncan Campus Site. With an introduction of the new educational product, which focuses on technology and individual learning styles, the study will measure the students’ academic success throughout their degree program.
Co-principal investigator Diesel is academic chair for the accelerated and RN-to-BSN programs and associate professor at Goldfarb. Drinkard is the Jack Taylor senior associate dean for academic affairs and Goldfarb professor. Davis is the Paul J. McKee senior associate dean for research and doctoral studies.
