Bernadette Henrichs, PhD, CRNA, CCRN, professor and director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing, has been named the 2017 Program Director of the Year by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Bernadette Henrichs, PhD, CRNA, CCRN, professor and director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program at Barnes-Jewish College Goldfarb School of Nursing, has been named the 2017 Program Director of the Year by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Henrichs will receive the award during the AANA’s Nurse Anesthesia Annual Congress held September 9-12, 2017, in Seattle, Washington.
Established in 1991, the Program Director of the Year Award is presented to a CRNA who has made a significant contribution to the educational process of student nurse anesthetists. The award recognizes the program director’s commitment to the profession of nurse anesthesia and the advancement of educational standards that further the art and science of anesthesia, resulting in high-quality patient care.
Henrichs started Goldfarb’s Nurse Anesthesia Program, in affiliation with Washington University’s Department of Anesthesiology, in the spring of 2004. Today, the school’s program is nationally ranked by U.S. News and World Report. “I am thrilled to receive this award,” said Henrichs. “Every program director dreams of receiving this award someday because it is an acknowledgement of the work and dedication to make the program top-notch. Starting Goldfarb’s Nurse Anesthesia Program is the greatest accomplishment of my career!”
Henrichs is co-editor of "A Resource for Nurse Anesthesia Education," the only book written specifically for nurse anesthesia educators. It was originally published in 2009, and the second edition will be released the summer of 2017. Henrichs also started a scholarship for nurse anesthesia students who are starting their final year of education. “This is the time when students feel the greatest financial burden because they cannot work while in the program due to its rigor,” she said.
